The first release of Elmo has hard plastic eyes and was originally only available in Canada at Toys R Us in 2002. In 2003 he became available in the US again as a Toys R Us exclusive.
The name "Big Book Elmo" appears just below his model number in his tush tag.
In 2003 Elmo was re-released with soft eyes, but was no longer a Toys R Us exclusive and did not have the name "Big Book Elmo" under his model number on the tush tag.
Also note that the typeface of the model number on the 2003 release non Toys R Us exclusive is in bold.
In 2007 Elmo was available at Wal Mart with soft eyes.
