TMX Elmo was announced at Toy Fair in New York in Feb. 2006.
This was to be the tenth anniversary of Tickle Me Elmo.
TMX stands for Tickle Me Elmo Tenth (Anniversary)
or
Tickle Me Elmo Extreme.

A huge cloud of secrecy surrounded Elmo's release. No pictures were available, only siloetes. --See some of the pre release siloete pictures at the bottom of this page.
Less than 50 toy industry insiders saw Elmo prior to his release date of Sept. 19th 2006 9 AM.

Elmo is available in English, French, & Spanish.
The French version & Spanish versions had their own model numbers.

The english version released in the US came in two different boxes.

The most common (shown below as Box 1) and the rarer (shown below as Box 2).
The back and sides are the same on both boxes.

Most stores were sold out of TMX Elmo by late in the day of Sept 19th. Online auctions were asking crazy prices, sum as high as 1 million dollars. There were over 10,000 auctions on ebay in the first few days after Elmo's release. Most of these auctions ended with no bids.

In Europe with Ernie being more popular than Elmo, a K.M.X. (T.M.X.) Ernie was released under the same secrecy as Elmo.
